Blog entry 'Town of Oberlin 1958-59 - Photos I took'
One side of Tappen Square was a line of stores, including Gibson's Bakery. When I was at Oberlin the college bookstore was in the basement. We often stopped at the bakery on the way to or from class to get a donut or cookie from the bakery. They supply fresh bagels and donuts to the Wilder Cafe and dining halls. In the fall and spring there is seating outside so you can eat what you have bought. But one of the first pictures I took after I got my new camera was not a photo of Gibson.s but a...
Thread 'Avian Photography: Wild Birds of Europe'
Welcome to Avian Photography: Wild Birds of Europe. I started this thread many years ago on Photography on the Net and am reviving it here. As the thread title indicates, birds need to be free and they need to have been shot on the European continent (that includes Ireland and the British Isles). It would be nice if you could tell us the species in your photo as not everybody is familiar with all the species we have in Europe. And if you have a story to tell about how the photo came to...
Nebulas - Deep Sky Wonders
Deep Sky Nebula's From the Wiki: A nebula (Latin for 'cloud, fog'; pl. nebulae or nebulas) is a distinct luminescent part of interstellar medium, which can consist of ionized, neutral, or molecular hydrogen and also cosmic dust. Nebulae are often star-forming regions, such as the Pillars of Creation in the Eagle Nebula. In these regions, the formations of gas, dust, and other materials "clump" together to form denser regions, which attract further matter and eventually become dense enough to...

Thread 'Sail Amsterdam 2025'
As some of you know we had Amsterdam Sail this year again. It's a 5 day maritime event held once every five years in Amsterdam in the Netherlands since 1975. Tall ships from all over the world visit the city to moor in its eastern harbour. The event was cancelled in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic. This year's motto was United by Waves. Sail Amsterdam takes place literally in my backyard as I live near the eastern docks where the tall ships come in. I always visit Sail and take pics. The...
Blog entry 'Murals in 'Mural Town' Katikati, New Zealand'
Right. We'll actually make this a little bit interactive. On some of the Murals, you'll see a black number on an oval shaped plaque in the corner. If you take note of the number, and look here, you'll get a bit of a description of the painting :) https://katikatiopenairart.co.nz/ourmurals/ Oh, and there's more than just Murals. There's also a few sculptures and other Art pieces spread around the main street of the town. I've included a few of them too :) Getting a sneak peak of local news...
Thread 'Glass Negatives from Early 1890's to about 1910'
These are glass negatives from c1890 to c1910 although some could be considerably earlier than 1890 and some are perhaps later than 1910, maybe from the 1920's or 1930's or later than that perhaps even. These photographs were taken by my wife's Great Uncle, Albert Black, probably with different camera's he may have owned. An Aunt of my wife (Marion) gave me 200+ Negatives (16 boxes) filled with these negatives, in the ORIGINAL boxes they were bought in. I will show you pictures of some...
Blog entry 'Manneken Pis 1950'
My dad was an Anatomist -he taught human anatomy to first year medical students. And he was interested in photographing human anatomy whether real, or artistic. So of course he took photos of the Manneken Pis statue. Manneken Pis is the name of the statue of a little boy who is urinating - he supplies water to what was at one time a water supply for the city. Manneken-Pis - closer He no longer has that function. He was 'dressed' in costumes four times a year, but we did not see that...
Blog entry 'Where's Nifty? in Amsterdam (2013)'
Before I start you need to know that I received Nifty from POTN member Tessa (in Estonia), who was a great host. She sent me the lens and packed it with a little Estonian doll and a fridge magnet. When I mentioned it in the Nifty thread at POTN the crowd of course immediately demanded to see pics of it. -.-.-.-.-.-.- Posted on POTN March 15, 2013: The postman didn't come this morning and I ended up having to go to the post office to pick Nifty up. Problem was it was raining. Steadily...

Blog entry 'My Parent's Trips Before I was Born - 1932 to 1937'
My mother learned to drive in 1923 in North Carolina. She was 14 and she learned on a Model T. The Model T had a different transmission from what you see today. Part of shifting gears was done with your feet. Mother She was taught by her uncles - her mother's younger brothers Willard and Earle who were 20 and 24 years old. Willard Earle They wanted to visit their girl friends and neither one wanted the other one to drive. Plus my mom looked old enough to maybe make the girl...
