The Studio Lighting Thread

I do have a few more of Mia. It’s possible she could become quite an in-demand model out here. I provided a few agencies for her to contact.

Mia. Always seek to control your lighting. Have a vision of the result and make it so. It’s really the best way to learn. Experiment. Take chances. Learn from mistakes. You never know, that mistake may be the most valuable thing. Once you understand how light works, and how your gear performs, your clients will benefit - which means - you will benefit.

Beautiful shot. Love her smile.

I wonder how you lit the background as there's no light there. Or is it the drop off (if that is the right term) from your main light?

Thanks. It was from a gridded light from up above the model. Cheated slightly by burning the edges around the model a bit for shape & accent.

Here’s a sample of what it looked like before that edit. Also, I changed her hair color a tad…. The photo below was not released. Just work in process. I would have filled in her hair that shows a hole through to the background (I always think holes like that are a distraction). Better yet, had her adjust the hair and bring some forward for the look above. Looked nicer I think.

Posted other shots of this model, but wanted a straight on view to evaluate how the Broncolor Para 133 performed on such a strong face. I was very happy with the results. The Para 133 was in its most defocused position showing a specular yet soft look and how the shadows sculpt such a face.

Just last week picked up a Broncolor Para 88. Planing to put it through its paces for comparative shots sometime in 2026. To compare the 222, 133 and 88. Actually, just between you ‘n me - it’s an excuse to have a ton of fun in studio with a few models.

Ah, a light above the model!

Not sure burning the edges around the model a bit is cheating though. I'd call it post processing to make the image even more perfect.

Mia says jump into the new year with great joy!

Again, very nice. The second image has a reflection that appears a little like a nose ring. Your images are so good that the rare distractions are more apparent than from others. In this case, it stands out more because it looks like there is something hanging down from the apparent nose ring.

Its just the striplight in the back left shining just a bit, making a small specular shine. I never noticed it. Its an easily corrected edit, or just leave as is. Thanks!
